Professor Clay Fuqua was named chair of the Department of Biology last year, effective July 1. Professor Roger Innes, a plant molecular biologist, held the position for four years prior to Fuqua's appointment. Professor Clay Fuqua became chair of the Department of Biology on July 1, 2013. Fuqua was recently named a 2014 Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and last year was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Jonathan Atwell (PhD '11) teamed with his research mentor, the noted avian biologist and IU Distinguished Professor of Biology Ellen Ketterson, to produce a scientific documentary about the junco, one of North America's most common songbirds. The film, entitled Ordinary Extraordinary Junco: Remarkable Biology from a Backyard Bird, highlights over 100 years of research on these sparrows found throughout the continent.
Biology congratulates Peter Cherbas, Elizabeth Raff, and Malcolm Winkler who were honored as Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) at a ceremony held in February 2014. They join eight other members of our faculty who were so honored in recent years.
Biologist Keith Clay was promoted to the rank of distinguished professor in April 2013. This is the most significant academic appointment that Indiana University offers.
After extensive recruiting efforts during the past two academic years, seven new faculty members have been hired.
Eight students with ties to the Department of Biology were selected by the National Science Foundation to receive awards through its prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) in 2013. Six individuals earned NSF-GRFP Fellowships in 2012.
Undergraduate research leads to a bright future. Mo Siddiq joined assistant professor Kristi Montooth's research lab during his freshman year where he developed a passion for evolutionary genetics in Drosophila, conducting independent research there throughout his four years at IU.
IU Bloomington campus community members attended a dedication celebration on February 21, 2014, to mark the recent renovations made to Jordan Hall. This current round of renovations was the most substantial set of improvements to the building since the addition completed in 1984.
