Howard Gest, an internationally known scientist widely recognized for his research on microbial physiology and metabolism, died in Bloomington, Ind., on April 24, 2012. Gest had been an active distinguished professor emeritus of microbiology and adjunct professor of history and philosophy of science at Indiana University, where he had served on the faculty since 1966.

Emeritus Professor of Biology Carlos O. Miller died on August 18, 2012, in Bloomington, Ind. Miller is best known for discovering not one, but two forms of a new class of hormones: kinetin and zeatin. Although he officially retired in 1987, he continued to conduct research on plant physiology until the time of his death.
