Accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Biotechnology

The accelerated Bachelor of Science/Master of Science in Biotechnology is designed for those students interested in research jobs in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries and who are committed to earning a master's degree. Students earn their elective credits by performing research in a lab on campus. This research gives them a head start on gaining the bench skill needed to secure gainful employment in research and development. This research experience is also very useful if you plan to apply to Ph.D. programs after completing the M.S.

Previous years requirements

Applicants must be currently enrolled in the Biotechnology B.S. at IU Bloomington to be eligible for this program. Normally, applicants should have reached junior standing (or will have reached junior standing when officially entering the program).

Applicants are expected to have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and must pass all required major courses with a B- or higher. Prospective applicants may inquire about possible exceptions to these requirements. A unique academic background may be an asset, and deficiencies can be made up during the remaining undergraduate portion of the B.S./M.S. program or early in the graduate program.

Required documents

1. Resume or CV stating your teaching, research, and/or industrial or business experiences; a list of publications, if available; and any college or professional honors and awards
2. Personal statement (approximately 500 words) that identifies your academic goals, career objectives, why you are applying to this program, what you expect to achieve in the program, and the qualifications that make you a strong candidate for the program.
3. Unofficial copy of your IU transcript (obtain a copy from the IU Student Center).

Recommendations

We require the names and email addresses of three people willing to write letters of recommendation for you. You are responsible for asking each of your recommenders to send a letter of recommendation directly to the Biotechnology Master's Degree Program Director, Dr. Dave Bollivar (dbolliva@iu.edu). Ideally, these letters will be from professors, program administrators, employers, or other professionals—people who have had direct experience with you as a candidate.
