Heather Reynolds, biology professor and director of graduate studies at Indiana University Bloomington, shares her involvement in a recent community outreach project.
The Greening Urban Neighborhoods from the Ground Up initiative is a collaborative effort between Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and IU. The initiative was established to amplify community input regarding environmental issues impacting quality of life in urban neighborhoods.
“This project flowed out of an interdisciplinary urban green infrastructure working group that I co-founded for the Prepared for Environmental Change Grand Challenge,” Reynolds said.
“As a plant ecologist, I’m inspired to be part of projects like this which aim to integrate plants into cities in ways that promote greater quality of life for people and help to make cities more sustainable and more resilient to climate change.”
Highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of this project, IU collaborators include Stephanie Freeman-Day and Neil Tong (current and former O’Neill graduate students) as well as IU Bloomington faculty Sarah Mincey (O’Neill) and Dana Habeeb (SICE) and IUPUI faculty Jeff Wilson (geography) and Gabe Filippelli (earth sciences).
