As a part of the its bicentennial, IU is producing the Women who built IU series—telling the stories of women who have been groundbreaking researchers, influential administrators, renowned artists, and cornerstones of the campus community.

One of the women honored in the series is Barbara Shalucha (1915-1992), who became a member of the botany faculty in 1948. Shalucha was responsible for the creation of the Hilltop Garden and Nature Center and its innovative youth science education program—one of the first of its kind in the country.

Learn more about Shalucha and her achievements in the Women who built IU series story: Biologist who created an enduring urban oasis and helped redefine youth science education.

NOTE: When Jordan Hall was dedicated in 1956, there was a botany department as well as a bacteriology department and a zoology department. These departments were brought together under the Division of Biological Sciences in 1963 and later morphed into other groupings that eventually became the Department of Biology in 1977.
