This scholarship was established in 2021 to honor the memory of Biology alum John C. Hanes, who was a director of engineering security for Eli Lilly until he lost his battle with cancer in 2020.
Hanes Memorial Scholarship Requirements
Open to any student with a declared major from the IUB Department of Biology (Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or the Molecular Life Sciences Developmental & Cellular Biology track).
- Have junior or senior standing at the start of the fall semester
- Have a minimum 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Be premed students
- Have science research experience
Preference will be given to those premed students with an interest in pursuing gastrointestinal or liver cancer research (including early detection, treatment, or potential cure).
$1,000—to be split equally between the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters.

A recommendation letter from your science faculty or postdoc research mentor is required and must be submitted separately by your mentor. Be sure your mentor can provide a recommendation by the September 27th deadline. Recommendation letters from graduate students will NOT be accepted. Submit the requested information about your science mentor on your application; a link to a portal to submit a recommendation will be emailed to your mentor.
Student Award Ceremony
Recipients of this award will be recognized at a student awards ceremony to be held at the end of the spring semester.
