Kindig Fellows Program in the Biological and Chemical Sciences

The Kindig Fellows Program in the Biological and Chemical Sciences was created from a generous donation from John R. and Wendy L. Kindig.

Full-year Kindig fellowships will be awarded to third-year graduate students in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry.

Directors of graduate studies from each department will review applications and nominate students for the award. A College committee consisting of faculty members from each department and the associate deans for graduate education and for research will review the files of the nominees and choose finalists. The committee will endeavor to distribute the awards proportionally among the departments.

Eligibility

Open to Ph.D. graduate students who are in the department of Biology, Chemistry, or Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry and who are in their third year of study at the time of application. Eligible students are those who show high promise of proceeding successfully to the Ph.D., as evidenced by their performance in the lab and in coursework and, where possible, by completion of departmental milestones.

Award

Each fellow will receive a $20,000 Kindig stipend, to be supplemented by $10,000 from the grant that supports the lab in which they are training. The fellowship will also provide health insurance, while the grant provides the fee remission and relevant fees (this should be stated in the advisor’s letter of recommendation; if this support is not possible, a letter from the director of graduate studies should explain how these costs would be covered).

Applications open on January 20, 2022, and close on February 16, 2022.

Application materials include your curriculum vitae along with a short description of your current research (no more than 1000 words, comprehensible to scientists from other disciplines) and a recommendation from your major advisor.

Submit your application as a single document, naming your document "Kindig-YourLastName-YourFirstName" and submit it via the Graduate Student Advising Office "dropbox."

Ask your advisor to submit a recommendation to the "dropbox" by the application deadline, making sure to indicate that the recommendation is for the Kindig fellowship.
